Working as field marine biologist. Seal research and conservation.

Some things to do in the field is not enough to be able to not panic or afraid, but you need to know to follow protocols and have some skills.

Entering a sea cave when there are seal pups is dangerous mostly for the seal pup because the mother can abandon it and then the seal pup it will be orphan (with what that means: to die, or grow as not wild animal but to need humans to feed it, etc.) and for you because even the mother can be aggressive and attack you when you enter the sea cave.

Following the protocols:

  • Entering the sea cave you must not block any exits. There must be always a passage for the seals to leave. And to do that the best way is to swim close to the walls.
  • We never get close if it's not necessary (necessary is only for seal research by specialists, or if it needs medical help).
  • We don't throw water or anything else to the seal.
  • We never feed it.
  • We keep pets and children away.
  • We don't touch them or harass them.
  • We try to not use flash photography (if it's not necessary).

And when we see a seal we carefully observe the size and the color of the seal and if it bears any characteristic scars or wounds. And we report this to seal research organization. For Greece, MOm is this organization.
